Smoke detectors are an easy way to assure the safety of you and your family. A properly functioning smoke detector can alert occupants to a fire during its early stages of development. Check and clean your Smoke Detector monthly to assure that it is working properly. If your smoke detector(s) are hard wired install a battery operated unit as a backup, remember that the electric type will not operate during power outages.

Keep Your Detector Working Properly
Some simple steps to keep your detector working properly include:
Test your detector weekly
Clean off the dust
Replace the battery every six months
If you recently moved into a new house/apartment, replace all of the batteries in the smoke detectors
Replace any damage detectors
Manufacturers recommend that you replace detectors about every 8 to 10 years

Stop by the Nags Head Fire and Rescue Headquarters, located at milepost 14 on the by-pass (5314 South Croatan Highway), from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and receive up to two free smoke detectors and up to four 9 volt replacement smoke detector batteries. Proof of Nags Head residency is required.
